About the Division
In its continued commitment to its students, faculty, staff and community, West Virginia University has established a Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Our Division works with all communities on our campus to ensure a safe and inclusive environment, based on the belief that all students and employees, regardless of their backgrounds, race, sexual orientation or religious preference, deserve to benefit from a diverse learning environment.
A heterogeneous campus is one that allows each person a forum for their voice. It is with the collection of these voices and our differences that our students, faculty and staff can learn and be at the forefront of applicable solutions regarding the current political and social climate of our region, country and world. The diversity which our students and faculty represent to one another is as crucial to their education as the lectures they attend and the books they read. It is there that they develop the empathetic lens through which to understand the world around them. This Division works toward making our community inclusive, as well as to give our students the tools to foster inclusiveness in their own communities and beyond.
It is our goal within the Division to exemplify the principles of social justice including the moral and legal obligation of promoting: opportunity, equality, civility, accessibility, and respect for all people. It is not only important to abide by legal mandates, but also to foster a community in which minorities can thrive. The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion acts both as an ambassador and an actor for the University and West Virginia, by using its vision to communicate, teach, and promote the principles of social justice, as well as protect and ensure the legal standards related to civil rights and affirmative action.
We are the first stop for many: whether an international student arriving on campus for the first time; a faculty member seeking mediation information and services; a student seeking accommodation for her/his disability, who is unsure of where to go for help; or a university department seeking leadership for education, promotion, and awareness.
The staff members of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are here to serve you. We invite you to visit us and learn more about our many roles on campus and in the community. Our main offices are located on the 2nd floor of the Suncrest Center on the Evansdale Campus of West Virginia University.
