Robert Lyons joined the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in May of 2002. Since that time he has served in a variety of roles supporting the University’s diversity and inclusion efforts. He began service in his current post as of fall 2016 when the Office of Innovative Inclusion and Outreach was created.
Mr. Lyons has a Masters of Social
Work with an emphasis on Community Organization and Social Administration and a
Masters in Public Administration. In addition, he holds a certificate in
Gerontology and one in Health Care Administration. He earned each of
these degrees and certifications at West Virginia University. He began
his career at West Virginia University in the institutional research unit which
is now part of the Planning Division. Prior to returning to graduate
school he managed a small business for over ten years. In that role he
was fortunate to be able to cultivate an environment in which 70% of those
promoted into leadership positions were from underrepresented groups.
In his current role, Robert Lyons serves as part of the leadership team for the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Like his colleagues on this team, he is committed to building productive partnerships and collaborations within the Division, across the University and throughout our community.
If you have ideas for making West Virginia University a more welcoming and inclusive campus community or if you work on programs with this goal, then he would like to hear from you. He would also be glad to share with you information about the programs and initiatives in which the Office for Innovative Inclusion and Outreach is already engaged. Nobody can accomplish a great deal entirely on their own, so let’s work together.
