Office of innovation, Inclusion and Outreach

The Office of Innovative Inclusion and Outreach exists to reach diverse individuals, attract them to our campus and to position them for success.

Whether you are a current or prospective student, faculty or staff member, we want to assist at positioning you to fulfilling your potential during your time at WVU and beyond. No one succeeds all on their own. Some might survive that way, but to thrive we need to be part of a community where we can find support and encouragement to do our best.

If you are already here and feeling isolated or excluded, will you let us help connect you to that community of support?

If you are already here and you look around your unit and you realize everyone looks like you and the closest thing you have to a fresh idea is trying a new place for lunch, then let us help you figure out how to reach out effectively to diverse candidates who would contribute to your unit in new ways.

We are here to serve you, to help you and your unit to be more effective in reaching your goals. We want to know what you need to succeed.

About

Often we hear the term “diversity and inclusion” used as if it were a single word – a single concept. Clearly the phrase encompasses two very different concepts.

Yet the two are nearly always linked - Why?

Organizations worth their salt know that you cannot have a truly successful program to increase diversity without companion programs to improve inclusion and engagement

Universities often find themselves focusing on increasing diversity through mandated affirmative action programming and reporting while not fully attending to issues of inclusion.

The reality is: Diverse individuals and groups bring new and interesting challenges with them.

If we are equipped to embrace people across a broad range of dimensions of Diversity (READ INCLUSION), then we succeed by:

  1. retaining them;
  2. helping them to be successful, and;
  3. facilitating their contribution to our collective success.

Spending all of our resources on increasing diversity and recruiting with little or no effort spent on inclusion demonstrates a lack of vision.

The creation of The Office for Innovative Inclusion and Outreach is clear evidence that West Virginia University is being more strategic than that in our approach.

We assure that someone wakes up every morning with Inclusion of Diverse Groups as their top priority.

No longer will these activities be squeezed into the time that remains after fulfilling mandatory compliance monitoring and reporting.
