YOUR VOICE: DAY ONE AND BEYOND

Let's Talk: Fall 2024

Join Vice President Meshea Poore and the rest of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as we welcome you to campus and provide some insight and resources for your first 90 days on campus.

The First 90 Days

Your voice matters from day one at WVU and you have an essential role in creating a safer campus community. The first 90 days on a college campus are an incredible time for students: You have a heightened sense of responsibility and independence, the chance to engage with peers in new communities and the opportunity to start making the vision you have of your future into reality through your academic career.

The Your Voice: Day One and Beyond campaign helps strengthen this voice by sharing and teaching about our safety resources, the various support services available on and around campus, how to recognize when someone is not safe and how to intervene as a bystander.

    30 Days

Congratulations on your first 30 days on campus! We want to take this time to recognize YOU as our most important campus safety partner. Everyone has a role to play in preventing sexual assault and there are many ways you can step up to make a difference. Mountaineers can keep each other safe by being pro-social bystanders, intervening with direct actions, distractions, and delegations.

    60 Days

It has officially been 60 days for you on campus. While you are in your groove of being on your own, establishing your social networks and trying to determine where you fit in, we want you to know that you are not alone. There are people and resources available for you. This timeframe is significant in exploring those resources as you continue to become the independent young adults you are.

Tip: If you're witnessing a tense situation, sometimes it’s best to remove the vulnerable person from the scene.

30 Days: Bystander Awareness

The first 30 days on a college campus are crucial to your student experience as you navigate your new environment and establish vital social connections.

Too often, needed conversations about how to navigate these areas take place after trouble has already happened. Who would you call if something goes wrong? What resources are available for someone experiencing _____? How would YOU respond if you saw something that was not okay? To prepare you for the first 30 days, this campaign will provide you the tools needed to be an educated and responsive bystander. In addition to online resources, the Office of Equity Assurance has partnered with 191 courses, WVU Parent's Club, and WVU Housing to ensure that all students, guardians, and community members have the tools and resources they need. Check back to this page on or after September 20th to hear from some of our specialists on what this time means and how they can help.

60 Days: Self Care

Picture it's October: Midterms are happening, the weather is getting colder, the national election is in a week, and the football team is on the road... How are you holding up?

This benchmark focuses on you – your support structures, social networks, and methods of self-care are incredibly important, and we want to make sure you have help if needed. Our colleagues at WELLWVU specialize in this very thing; whether it be educational resources for you or a friend, trainings on how to deal with situations that may be difficult, and more are all available through their unit. Want to learn to meditate? Need to figure out how to alleviate that exam-day anxiety? Does your roommate make you want to jump through the wall? WELLWVU has you covered. Check back to this page on or after October 20th to hear from some of our specialists on what this time means and how they can help.

90 Days: Housing and Safety

Ah, yes, the end of the semester – best time of the year, right? Not for everyone...

The holidays, returning home and being around certain people can be difficult for some. Did you know that there are free mental health sessions available for WVU students, accessible by your phone from anywhere? How about that there are trainings and resources on how to have difficult conversations? If 'going home' feels more like 'going to battle', we can even help with that, too. Check back to this page on or after November 19th to hear from some of our specialists on what this time means and how they can help.
